Autumn hair shedding: what is normal and what is not

Every autumn the same thing happens in bathrooms across northern Europe: more hair in the brush, more in the shower drain, and a quiet worry that something is wrong. Usually nothing is. But it is worth knowing where the line sits.

How much is ordinary

A scalp holds roughly 100,000 hairs, and each one runs its own cycle of growing, resting and falling. Losing somewhere in the region of 50 to 100 hairs a day is unremarkable. Seasonal variation on top of that is well documented anecdotally by anyone who has ever owned a hairbrush: more comes out in autumn than in spring.

What matters is not the count on one bad morning. It is the trend. Ordinary shedding does not change your parting, does not thin your ponytail measurably, and settles down within a couple of months.

When to stop guessing and ask

See a doctor, a dermatologist or a trichologist if any of these apply:

  • Your parting is visibly wider than it was a few months ago, or your ponytail is noticeably thinner.
  • Hair is coming out in clumps rather than strands.
  • There are patches of scalp with no hair at all.
  • The scalp itself is sore, flaking, itching or inflamed.
  • Shedding arrived alongside fatigue, weight change or a new medication.

Hair loss has real medical causes: iron and ferritin levels, thyroid function, post-illness telogen effluvium, pregnancy and postpartum changes, and genetic pattern loss. All of those are diagnosed with a consultation and sometimes a blood test, not with a shampoo.

What hair care can honestly do

This is where we have to be straight with you. Hair grows in the follicle, below the skin. A leave-in cosmetic treatment sits on the fibre, above the skin. It cannot reach the follicle, so it cannot change how much you shed.

What it can do is stop you losing length you already have. Autumn does three things to hair: humidity swings lift the cuticle, indoor heating dries the fibre, and hats and collars add friction. A smoothed cuticle takes all three better. Less breakage means the hair you keep looks thicker, even though the count has not changed.

A realistic autumn routine

  1. Wash less often and cooler. Hot water opens the cuticle.
  2. Squeeze, do not rub, with a microfibre towel.
  3. One sealed 1 ml capsule through damp mid-lengths and ends, every day. Never the roots.
  4. Drop the styling temperature by 20 °C. Most people never notice the difference in result.
  5. Loose ties, and never on wet hair.

Ellips Hair Vitamin is a cosmetic leave-in treatment. It conditions, smooths and helps protect the hair fibre against heat and mechanical damage. It is not a medicine, it does not treat hair loss and it does not make hair grow. If you are worried about shedding, see a clinician. If you want the long version of what we can and cannot show you, it is on our research page.
